John Malkovich o cómo ser único
John Gavin Malkovich es uno de los mejores y más reputados actores del cine del siglo XXI. Nacido en una familia con sangre croata, alemana y escocesa, e hijo de un director de conservación estatal, dirigió sus primeros intereses hacia la ecología, pero pronto se centró en el teatro, donde desarrolló una intensa carrera hasta llegar al cine. Los Gritos del Silencio, Muerte de un Viajante, El Imperio del Sol, Las Amistades Peligrosas, De Ratones y Hombres, Mary Reilly, Con Air, El Hombre de la Máscara de Hierro, Eragon o Cómo ser John Malkovich, son sólo algunos títulos en que ha participado y donde se ha ganado a pulso su prestigio como actor serio, solvente, camaleónico y misterioso. Sorprendentemente para muchos y no tanto para otros, Malkovich es un hombre situado políticamente a la derecha, que se considera "libertarian" (liberal en castellano) y que en muchas ocasiones ha expresado sus opiniones, que como vereis pueden considerarse realmente contra corriente. Politically, Malkovich has described himself as a libertarian.[7][8] He is a supporter of the death penalty.[9] When the Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy was executed in 1994, Malkovich organised a champagne party for himself and his friends. Actor William Hootkins, who worked with Malkovich in BBC television's Rocket to the Moon, stated "In fact he's so right-wing you have to wonder if he's kidding."[10]In the United Kingdom in 2002 at the Cambridge Union Society, when asked whom he would most like to "fight to the death," he replied that he would "rather just shoot" journalist Robert Fisk and British MP George Galloway.[11] Fisk reacted with outrage.[12] When interviewed by The Observer, Malkovich elaborated on his comments: "I hate somebody who is supposed to be a Middle Eastern expert who thinks Jesus was born in Jerusalem. I hate what I consider his vile anti-semitism. This being said, I apologize to both Fisk and Galloway; they seem like good men... but if they make such a heinous mistake again, I will not hesitate to murder them brutally by way of the gallows".
It's not easy being conservative in Hollywood. Stars like Tom Selleck and Bo Derek have learned that lesson well.But now we're seeing a new right-thinking celebrity braving his way forward. It's none other than the independent-spirited John Malkovich.
It seems that the actor recently gave the Chicago Tribune some of his unparalleled observations about our criminal justice system.
"America's left wing wants criminals coddled, and no one wants anyone punished," he says. "I would have no problem pushing the switch while having dinner."
Malkovich went on to tweak the anti-capital-punishment crowd further by saying, "We're all going to die, so it should just be called the early death penalty."
The Left Coast Report suspects that Malkovich won't be on the guest list of Hollywood's next pet charity banquet.
Hootkins is one of many suprised to find that this wild man, like Sam Shepard, is politically conservative. "Yeah, he's extremely right-wing. So much so I still sometimes wonder if he's kidding. But one key to his character is this recent immigrant thing in his family. Everything else he's done is stuff his parents can't understand. But his politics - that they can relate to." Hootkins, who himself speaks six languages and has acted since the age of 17, pauses. "He's a complicated man. An extremely sweet human being. And, in the literal sense of the word, the most interesting guy I've ever worked with."Leo Davis detects another impulse at work in the actor's conservatism. "Despite all this free-form, free-style experimentation, he's still got a lot of that American Masterpiece Theatre awe. He always teases me about living in scruffy, 'dirty, leftie' Notting Hill. Of course, he means it tongue-in-cheek. But to John, England is Chelsea. He really does love it that we have an aristocracy."
